University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus
San Juan, Puerto Rico

The University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, is the largest educational institution in Puerto Rico, serving some 19,000 students over 11 campuses, Rio Piedras the jewel among them. The Téatro Aula Magna is a proscenium-type theatre seating 1750, completed in 1939 in a Spanish-revival style. The building is currently undergoing complete renovation with enhancements to stage and support facilities. Coleman-Davis-Pagan, Arquitectos, of San Juan are the architects in charge; Robert Lorelli is the theatre consultant; Acentech of Cambridge, Mass., are the acoustical consultants. The Teatro is one of the city’s premier performance spaces.
The Téatro was originally intended for a theatre organ in typical location either side of the proscenium arch. Plans are now underway for a small but effective concert organ to be installed. Builder selection is expected by the end of 2005. This assignment entails complete project oversight.
